EXPO 1851-2015.CULTURA DEL CIBO

The volume EXPO 1851-2015 and four volumes of Cultura del cibo (Food Culture) make up the corpus of works dedicated to UTET Grandi Opere at the EXPO event.

EXPO 1851-2015. Storie e immagini delle Grandi Esposizioni is a book dedicated to the history of the Word Fairs from their inception through to the present day, supervised by Professor Alberto Abruzzese, Communication Sociologist and former professor of the IULM University in Milan. The volume is edited by Professor Luca Massidda, Professor of Urban Sociology at the School of Architecture and Design of Ascoli Piceno, Camerino University.

The work is structured into three sections. The first, entitled Storie, analyses the importance of the Great Exhibition – from London 1851 to Shanghai 2010 – from various perspectives (from work, science, technology, art, architectural impact, through to communication). The second section, Geografie: le Grandi Esposizioni nel mondo e in Italia retraces the history of the fairs with a geographical approach – Europe, the Americas and Asia – with particular emphasis on Italy with the Exhibitions in Milan in 1906, Turin in 1911 and Rome in 1942 (which was never held due to the war).

The third section of the book, entitled Primo piano: Milano 2015, is dedicated to the Expo of today, highlighting the genesis, the aspects of design, architecture and display, the economic importance for Milan and for the national system, as well as the importance of the theme “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life”, which represents the cultural axis underpinning the event.

The book contains 42 essays by well-respected scholars addressing the subject of the Great World Exhibitions. Lastly, the volume ends with some interviews with key figures from cultural institutions about the significance of the Expo 2015, as well as the full text of the “Charter of Milan”.

In large format 24x31 cm and with more than 500 pages, the volume offers a wide and spectacular sequence of 256 images, which – in addition to their historical and cultural value – make consulting the work more appealing and attractive, somewhat representing a story in itself, a “volume in the volume”.

CULTURA DEL CIBO is a great piece of work made up of four volumes on the world history of food supervised by Massimo Montanari, Professor of Medieval History and Food History at the University of Bologna. Massimo Montanari was supported by Professor Françoise Sabban, a lecturer at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris (for volumes 1 and 2) and by Professor Alberto Capatti, former Rector of the University of Gastronomic Sciences in Pollenzo (for volume 3).Given its approach to the subject of the world’s food and natural resources, encompassing historical, anthropological, scientific, sociological and economic aspects, Cultura del cibois beyond any doubt, a project that could only be conceived in Italy, becoming a symbol of Italian excellence. Italy is in fact the only country in the world which the international recognises as being a pioneer for its healthy and balanced management of food resources and eating habits. 

Cultura del cibois a world-class piece of work, made with the contribution of 120 international specialists, addressing the subject of food in all cultures. It should therefore should be translated and distributed to all the continents, becoming the “manifesto” of a new way of understanding our relationship with food and nutrition. Only with UTET Grandi Opere could a work with such a cultural, as well as ethical value be released.

The volume by UTET Grandi Opere Expo. 1851-2015 is accompanied by an official commemorative coin for Expo 2015.

The coin is in nordicbrass made using recycled metal from copper and zinc. This alloy maintains the characteristic gold colour over time and, being nickel-free, it does not cause any allergies. The coin is embedded in the inside back cover of the book.

The coin has a diameter of 32 mm and a weight of 13.10 g; it was designed by the creators of the Euro, Laura Cretara and Luc Luycx
